INTRODUCTION OF DMAP

What is DMap?

DMap, which stands for Disability Map, is a map application that aims to help people with disabilities to search for accessible infrastructures.

Accessibility is defined in Vietnam Law on People with Disabilities, which has been effective since January 1st, 2011: “Accessibility is the fact that people with disabilities can have access to public infrastructures, transportation, information technology, cultural services, sports, tourism and other services to integrate into the community.”

The database of DMap contains different types of public infrastructures, such as restaurants, shopping malls, entertainment centers, religious buildings.

Who develops DMap?

DMap is a social project set up by DRD and Hoa Sen University since 2015. This project is sponsored by UNIID SEA (Universities and Councils Network on Innovation for Inclusive Development in Southeast Asia).

DMap is based on another project of paper map which had been developed by DRD from 2011 to 2012.

In September 2017, Disability Research and Capacity Development (DRD) continued to be received fund from USAID for project "Access For All" 2018-2020 term. In the new term of project, one of the main activities belongs with the project objective "Building PWD's capacity in Tay Ninh and Binh Dinh (two provinces of the project) on public works access right" that is to develop and encourage PWDs/people without disabilities to download and use DMap as well as more often update information/location to enrich the supporting PWDs application.

What is DMap used for?

DMap stimulates the integration of people with disabilities into the society.

To people with disabilities: DMap is an effective method to collect information about accessible public infrastructures. Locations updated on DMap can be parks, offices, restaurants and so on, each of which is essential in daily life for everybody including people with disabilities.

To people without disabilities: DMap gives them an opportunity to support people with disabilities. In addition, this application raises public awareness about the need of integration of people with disabilities while public infrastructures in our country have yet not been modified to help them. In a long term approach, DRD expects that thanks to DMap, our society will gain a better perspective that may lead to a positive impact on civilians and government so that public infrastructures will be modified to be accessible for people with disabilities.

DMap supports both English and Vietnamese, working on IOS and Android.
